FAQ

Is tutoring with Moon Education the right fit for my child?

After 19 years of teaching children, I understand firsthand how challenging it can be for teachers to provide every student with the individual attention they deserve. Despite teachers’ dedication and hard work, the reality is that with up to 30 children in a classroom and limited time per lesson, it’s difficult to consistently offer each child truly tailored support.

At Moon Education, I offer something different: 1:1 or small group dedicated time with an experienced teacher, giving your child a full hour of individualized attention. Each session is uniquely tailored to their needs, allowing me to adapt my teaching methods and resources “in the moment” based on their responses. I’ve seen students make remarkable progress in a single hour—progress that might take much longer in a traditional classroom. Parents also frequently share that this experience positively impacts their child’s confidence and attitude towards learning and school. I believe this is because children flourish in a consistent, supportive environment where their individual journey is valued.

Where are you based?

My tutoring room is in Skipton, conveniently located near Sandylands Sports Centre. Most sessions take place here, but I also offer online sessions if preferred.

What days do you offer tutoring?

I currently hold sessions on Monday evenings and Wednesday evenings.

Do you have a DBS check?

Yes, I have a current, up-to-date DBS check, which I’m more than happy to share with you.

How do you know where to begin with a child?

To assess where to start, I gather information in several ways. I begin with a conversation with the parent or guardian to understand their goals for tutoring. In our first session, I’ll conduct an informal assessment in the targeted subject area and use this to identify specific learning gaps. I also discuss any challenges directly with the child to gain their perspective. If helpful, I may review their most recent school report and, with permission, speak to their teacher to ensure a collaborative approach.

What does a typical session look like?

Each session is uniquely crafted to meet the child’s needs, so there’s no “typical” lesson. Generally, we’ll start by reviewing previous learning to reinforce retention, then move into new material. If needed, we’ll reinforce key concepts before progressing. We always end with a discussion about any specific topics the child would like to cover in our next session, and I incorporate these into my weekly planning.

Will you provide all the materials?

Yes, I provide all necessary materials for our sessions. The only exception is for 11+ tutoring, where a small additional charge covers the cost of practice papers (£35 for boys and £25 for girls).

How do you support children with SEN?

I have extensive experience working with children with Special Educational Needs, including Autism, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Speech and Language difficulties, and more. My approach is highly adaptable, creating a safe, supportive environment where children with SEN feel comfortable and capable. I use bespoke resources and often “think outside the box,” exploring new techniques alongside established methods to find what works best for each child.

How do you extend the learning of children who need more challenge?

If your child thrives with additional challenges, I offer customised lessons that stretch their skills and foster advanced learning. My focus is always on designing stimulating sessions that push them in a positive, constructive way.

If you notify me at least two weeks in advance, I’ll credit any pre-paid sessions. However, due to limited spaces, I can’t offer refunds for missed sessions due to illness. For cases like COVID isolation, I’m happy to arrange an online session as a substitute.
