Yorkshire Dales Bushcraft
My most recent project involved collaborating with Yorkshire Dales Bushcraft to enhance their educational offerings for local schools. This project drew on my background in both teaching and senior leadership to design a comprehensive, curriculum-aligned program for primary-aged children.
I developed a full suite of lesson plans—long-term, medium-term, and short-term—for each year group. These plans integrate National Curriculum learning objectives across multiple subjects with hands-on Bushcraft skills, creating a cohesive, age-appropriate outdoor learning experience. By crafting a bespoke planning format, I aimed to bridge the gap between Bushcraft and classroom learning. The format includes essential components for instructors and teachers: learning objectives, WILFs (What I’m Looking For), introductions, tasks, plenaries (including mini-plenaries!), Bloom’s Taxonomy-based key questions, and detailed resource lists. I also created resource packs for every lesson to ensure easy implementation.
Additionally, I developed a ‘Bushcraft Passport’ for students, which enables them to track their own learning journey, encouraging self-accountability and a deeper engagement with their progress. To complement this, I introduced a certificate-based reward system that recognizes their achievements as they complete their passports.
To support ongoing communication between Yorkshire Dales Bushcraft, schools, and parents, I created a series of school-specific newsletters. These outline each term’s learning objectives, keeping parents informed and engaged in their children’s Bushcraft experiences.
If you are interested in developing the educational offering of your own company, I am happy to provide you with examples of the planning and resources I have developed in the past. Please get in touch via the ‘CONTACT’ tab above.
